Business Information
First established in 1988, we are a local, family owned and ran company. We carry out landscaping projects both large and small for residential clients throughout the Lothians. We undertake a variety of gardens from initial design through the whole installation process to completion. We are TREX COMPOSITE DECKING PRO INSTALLERS - see Trex.com - and fit and supply both both timber and TREX composite decks, driveways, patios, walls, turfing and artificial grass installation, fencing, gravel and all forms of soft planting.
We also maintain and manage residential and private estates. We own machinery ranging from pedestrian to ride-on mowers with collection, out front ride-on mowers and tractors with mounted mowers. We currently own a Kubota F3680 61" out front mower, a John Deere 1545 62" out front mower, a Kubota F3090 60" with flail mower, a Kubota G21 48" and a Kubota G23 48" mid mounted mowers with collection and a Kubota L4240 tractor with 12' Trimax mower attached. All mowers are operated by trained staff giving the best, professional finish.
Our eldest son Lewis joined the company in 2016 and has excelled. His younger brother Ben joined in 2019 and they will form the future of the company. Initially called Philip Mitchell Landscaping, to reflect the input and the future ownership, in 2020 we decided to change the company name. Therefore as of February 2020 the trading name of the company was changed to Mitchell Landscaping and Ground Care Limited.

We have maintained the grounds of Gosford House for 30 years. We use several different machines for the different lawns throughout the estate.
Client wanted to changed a large 150 square metre patio to a more modern composite decked terrace. With additional planters, artificial grassed utility area and gravel grids.

We had an old fence and gate removed and replaced with new. From the beginning of the process Phil was very polite and professional and kept us well informed leading up to the start of the job. On the job itself Phil and his team were prompt and gave total respect to our property, going the extra mile to make sure everything was left as we’d want it. They provided a first class job and worked very hard to get it done in good time. We also have to mention the very competitive quote we received,we were very happy it. We will definitely use Mitchell Landscaping again for future projects and couldn’t recommend highly enough.

Initially I had a small patio area ksid in paving .
A few weeks later I extended this area which was laid in gravel as a drying area and the whole area was fenced in with a gate for access .
The additional work was completed very professionally in 1&1/2 days to my total satisfaction .

We had our entire back garden redone with new paving slabs and a patio, grass re-laid, raised beds built, and a mixture of shrubs and flowers planted in the raised beds and boundaries.
Phil was excellent and helped us with the entire design as we were not really sure where to begin. During the work him and his team where extremely professional, and the years of experience clearly shows in the quality of their work. They were also very accommodating to some last minute requests.
We are very happy with the end result and would definitely use them again for any future projects.

My front and side garden was cleared of old chippings and slabs, a weed membrane was laid then new gravel placed on top, all retained by a new timber edging.
I was delighted with the work Lewis and Ben carried out. They were polite, very hard working and completed the job in one and a half days.

We approached Mitchell Landscaping to do considerable composite decking in our East Lothian garden. From initial contact to finalising work this Father and sons company were professional and good to have around. Our original decking plan evolved on site and is, very attractively, on 4 levels. The composite decking quality is outstanding, I have a couple of irks with how some of the filling in is done, a few small pieces run against grain, but Phil tells me that’s the product rather than his intention.

Phil and his team lifted old artificial grass, replaced it with turf, lifted and disposed of two old decking areas, replaced the large area with composite decking and designed a lovely seat and planters for the smaller area.

Work was actually done for my Dad but he is delighted with the workmanship, professionalism and reliability of the full team. They kept the area clean, tidy and safe for my Dad even under awful weather conditions. They were delayed in starting due to the weather but I was kept up to date with expected times etc. The final finish is of a high standard and although only finished yesterday we have already had a ew neighbours saying how good the garden now looks.

Mitchell's have just completed a superb perimeter fence around our garden in Gullane. I cannot recommend this company highly enough. Phil and his team replaced our flat roof balcony decking, removing the old rotten timber decking and installing new Trex composite decking. Not only were they accommodating with suitable time to carry out the works, but they did a great job working quickly through the various stages. We received a very competitive quotation from Phil to replace our wooden decking with Trex, a high quality composite decking product. Phil contacted us with an early opportunity in December 2023 to undertake the work which we were delighted to accept.
Phil and his sons arrived promptly on the day and worked efficiently to complete the installation of Trex in two separate areas of the garden. The result was perfect, providing us with an attractive non-slip surface.

Following a first class experience of Phil and his team last year, when they erected new fencing in our garden, they recently returned to do some landscaping and planting at the fences.
In particular, we had a very problematic slope at the bottom of the front garden, which was difficult to maintain and was overgrown with weeds. We asked Phil for some ideas and recommendations to deal with the slope.
From a very basic discussion, Phil has landscaped and transformed the area. We are absolutely delighted with the result and have had lots of complements from everyone who has seen it.
Once again, all of the work has been completed to the highest standard, the team have gone the extra mile and are a real pleasure to deal with.
We would have no hesitation in recommending them.

I hired Phil to landscape my very scruffy gravel/paved/weed-infested driveway! They clear what was there, excavated and created a beautiful driveway with gravel using a gravel stabilising system, installed drain covers, edging etc! Phil and his son did a fantastic job - 100% satisfied customer! They arrived when they said they would, kept me updated all the way through and even the snow and rain didn't delay things too much! They also trimmed my hedge and cleared the cuttings away, which was a very last minute request from me! My garden fence was destroyed in a recent storm and needed full replacement. Although the company was extremely busy my work was done in good time and very efficiently. The landscaping team were very tidy and cleared the site at the end of the job. Phil Mitchell went above and beyond to help and kept me aware of any problems arising on the job. We have used Phil before on several occasions and had no worries about having him refurbish an area of the garden into composite decking. His suggestions about materials and layout was spot on.

I have used Mitchell Landscaping before and was happy to use them again. They relaid a large patio (not originally laid by them), laid a brick edging, cut back a hedge and repaired a wooden fruit cage. As ever, the work was of a high standard. The team are friendly and professional. They come when they say they will. I will use them again.

A pleasure to have Phil and his two sons carrying out work in my front garden. Estimate sent by email and date of commencement of work confirmed. The team were very prompt and tidy in their approach to work. No stopping for long mobile calls just got on with the job. We had a decking area, new garden gate and raised beds put in. We also had the surround for out patio replaced, an edge made to our lawn, numerous bushes pruned and new plants put in the raised beds. Phil and Lewis transformed an ugly duckling wall into a thing of beauty, which has also transformed our garden. We were consulted, offered ideas and choices on what might work best and given excellent recommendations and advice, both on the material and installation.
We were stunned at the end result, and also at the speed of the work. Our garden was spic and span on completion, and an extra request was accommodated. Had an old fence removed and new one installed, which included replacing and cutting some large concrete flags. Philip arrived at the time that he specified to give his estimate, and we were kept fully informed throughout the process. Again, he arrived as specified to carry out the works, all of which were carried out in a professional manner. After completion, all of the debris was taken away and the site left tidy. Great job completed, and I would not hesitate to recommend Philip and his company to anyone.

The fence at the rear of my property was rotten. It was fronted by Leylandii which were there when we moved in 34 years. Phil arranged for a a firm of tree surgeons to remove the trees and then he and his team removed and erected a new 2m high fence. Everything went smoothly, the site left tidy and the cost was less than expected. Well happy.

I had new fencing and a redesign of the rear garden done. The garden now boasts a pergola, a mixture of raised and regular flower beds, artificial grass, which has been edged with cobbled stones and new paving. Phil and his boys were reliable, professional and hardworking. They were friendly and remained good humoured despite working in some pretty awful weather conditions.

We've had Phil do work for us before and not only is his work and manner highly professional, his previous work has endured for years and still looks great. On this occasion we had him do a complete makeover of a sizeable rear and side garden for elderly inlaws which involved laying a lot of turf, building some fences, some decking, slabbing, raised beds and laying a lot of chips. Basically Phil completely transformed a massive area from a moss and weed ridden mess to a proper garden of incredibly high standard in about a week - even dealing admirably and diplomatically with some of the problems caused by 'lesser jobs' done for us by other tradesmen we'd had in. Cant praise Phils work highly enough - we already have plans to get him in to do some more work in future.

I had a clear idea of what I wanted to achieve with our front garden, and had drawn a scale plan - but I had no idea whether it was practical. At all stages, Phil listened to my ideas, offered constructive and practical suggestions and ultimately through his skill and hard work, turned my plan into a reality. I really appreciated Phil's time in discussing materials, options and solutions to some of the unforeseen issues that cropped up, and felt that he was focussed on giving us the garden we wanted - at no time did I feel as though anything was too much trouble. Communication was excellent at all times - from the first site visit to the end of the project, and he was totally reliable. Phil was contacted to give a quote for garden works to allow access to the garden for someone with limited mobility. He arrived on time and was pleasant and courteous throughout. He provided sound advice on the best materials to use and suggestions to enhance access. He managed to start earlier than anticipated and he and the boys worked hard each day to achieve great results. They were always on time and tidy and have done a great job in a short timescale. We engaged PML to totally redesign, and replace decking in the rear garden. Phil and his son carried out the work in a very professional manner. They arrived on time each day and completed the job on the date specified. All the old decking was removed from the site and the garden was left neat and tidy. The finished work exceeded our expectations.

A new build garden on a horrendous slope! Garden was terraced with artificial grass, decking, planters and paving. Fences either erected or made private: Philip and his men worked tirelessly. Philip made the plan for the garden and it looks wonderful. The builder left an awful slope but the garden is now level. I can now maintain the garden thanks to them. It is lovely and my grandchildren love it too! Thank you.

Prepared a new build house garden which was just soil and made a paved patio and path all round the house, pebble borders and a slated and pebble maintenance free feature design in the back garden: Phil was really helpful and professional at every point in the process. I was a bit of a nuisance client having not done a garden before and having only just moved in, I hadn't fully thought through my plans at the outset, and as a result I had quite a few questions and changes to request as things occurred to me. Phil was so polite and patient throughout and re-drafted the plans to suit using his excellent knowledge of the construction practicalities and his good eye for design to produce a garden which is both functional and attractive. I am absolutely delighted with the result. The work was done on time and without any mess or disruption. I had absolutely no worries about leaving the firm to do the work while I was in the office. I would definitely recommend.

Clear rear garden of decking, paving and associated materials. To lay a sandstone patio and access path. To lay an artificial lawn to complete area. To lay bark and pebbles to borders: Work was due to be started when we would be on holiday. Phil visited prior to our holiday to discuss exact work to be done. Arrived back and was delighted at work already done. Garden is now exactly as we wanted it. Visitors have all admired the work. We were especially pleased with the disguising of some very ugly manhole covers.

They arrived on time and completed the job professionally and to a very high standard. He was very considerate to my neighbours and made sure the surrounding area was cleaned up before he left.
